Program Details

Orinda Intermediate School has decided to implement a  Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program to help eliminate shared devices in an effort to  protect students in hybrid instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic.  All students are encouraged to bring their own device; however, devices will be available for check out from OIS if families are not able to bring a device to school.

The device will be used daily in almost every class. Therefore, choosing a machine that will allow the student to work most effectively is very important.  For example, some students may prefer a solid keyboard, while others may prefer a virtual keyboard like on an iPad.

Newer chromebooks, Apple, or Windows Laptops are strongly recommended.  Smartphones, tablets and e-readers are not recommended.

Example devices:

Dell Chromebook 11, 4GB RAM
Acer Chromebook 311 C733
New Dell Chromebook 11, 4GB RAM (with or without touch screen)
MacBook Air 11", 128GB

The device should:

  • Connect to the internet via Wi-Fi
  • Have a minimum screen size of 10.2" diagonal
  • Have at least 5 hours of battery life
  • Have a physical keyboard  (strongly recommended, can be detachable)
  • Have the ability to support headphones (students should bring their own headphones, as well)
  • Be able to run all Google apps like Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.

Most daily class activities will be based online using Google apps - so a newer chromebook is an ideal option. OIS has previously purchased Dell 3100 Chromebooks, but other models with similar specifications are acceptable. Some students may prefer more powerful options that a laptop can provide like larger storage capacity, video editing, photoshop, etc.

Students will be expected to bring a fully-charged device, power adapter and headphones to school every day in order to access class material.
