Beginning Makerspace is a semester course that introduces students to an array of projects such as 3D printed objects, laser cut and burned projects, mask making, moldmaking, epoxy resin and silicone molds, friendship bracelets, Arduino & Raspberry Pi microprocessors and sensors, Makey Makey and Sphere technologies, leatherwork, sewing, textile and beading projects, fishing lures, as well as numerous Maker Challenges like Tallest Wire Tower, Tallest Wood Tower, Farthest Plane, Farthest Rocket, Fastest Built Bridge, and Castle Attack.

Beginning Woodworking
Beginning Woodworking is a semester course that introduces students to basic woodworking tools, machines, fasteners, finishes, adhesives, and wood materials. Basic fractional measurement will be covered, as well as manual technical drawing, computer-assisted drafting on Google Draw, and an introduction to common wood joints and shop safety. Students will develop a written action plan that includes a materials list, needed tools and machines, project procedures, a risk assessment, and a risk mitigation plan. Students will have the opportunity to make 3-5 required projects that utilize an array of tools, machines, and materials. The required projects will be a birdhouse, spoon, lightswitch plate, cutting board, and/or a clock organizer.

OIS Competitive Debate is an award-winning Debate Team, founded in 2007. Coursework includes argumentation, refutation, impact calculus, debate flowing, research, and brief writing. Public Speaking is not a prerequisite, but confident speaking and strong reading skills are important. Students benefit from high school mentorship and developing strong team bonds. Students will participate in 6 East Bay Debate League tournaments throughout the year, held on Saturdays at Member schools. While not required, participation in tournaments is a fundamental part of this class.

Chorus
OIS choir is an award-winning chorus where students will improve singing in harmony, solo singing, and reading music. Choristers will perform a variety of concerts including a Winter Concert, Pop Concert, tours to Elementary Schools, performing at Six Flags and, CMEA choral festivals. The class will sing a variety of styles such as Pop, Broadway, Folk, Spirituals, and Concert Selections No prior experience is necessary for a student to participate in Chorus.

Video Production 1
Video Production focuses on the wonderful world of TV and Film. Fun and learning combine to help beginning video students explore the changing media scene with an emphasis on hands-on work. Students will learn the “language of TV and film” as well as the basics of photography, videography and editing techniques. This includes an introduction to the professional editing platform, Adobe Premiere Pro. Students will also work alone and in groups to learn the fundamentals of storyboarding, script writing, performance, and criticism. Projects include everything from PSAs and news stories to stop-motion and live action movies. Students will be exposed to the elements of visual storytelling, nonfiction writing, public speaking, news gathering, and the tenants of good journalism.

KOIS/Video Production 2
KOIS/Video Production 2 is a semester course based on the CA state standards. The class has an equal focus on both film and broadcast journalism. Students will learn about broadcast journalism from the ground up. They will understand how to pitch a story, interview protocol, write a news script, shoot on the fly, edit sequentially, and produce an informative fact-based story that is ready for broadcast on KOIS-TV. Students will also be charged with editing, anchoring, and producing the student-run broadcast for the wider OIS audience.
Students will learn how filmmakers craft their films for maximum impact, the gear they use, the jobs in film production, and the techniques in writing, lighting, filming, audio, and editing that help bring a film to life.

The Leadership & WEB class is a semester elective for 8th-grade students. Students will organize and plan school-wide events, spirit days, and community service projects. The Peer Mentor Program provides students with the opportunity to support and build meaningful connections with peers in Special Day Class. Mentors assist in various activities, fostering a positive and inclusive environment while developing leadership, communication, and empathy skills. Through collaboration with teachers and staff, students will help create supportive learning experiences, promote social interaction, and model positive behaviors.
