Attendance
Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways we can prepare our students for success–both in school and in life. OIS teachers work diligently to plan lessons for each school day that teach students important concepts and skills. When students miss all or part of a school day, they miss important opportunities to learn. Regular and consistent school attendance should be considered a priority.
Process for Reporting an Absence
When a student must be absent, the parent/guardian should call the OIS 24-hour attendance line at (925) 258-6332, stating the child's name, reason for absence, date(s) of absence, grade level, and parent/guardian’s first and last name and relationship to the student.
According to Education Code Section 48205, the following types of absences are either excused or unexcused.
Excused
Students can complete all assignments and tests missed during the absence, receiving full credit for completed work.

Unexcused
Students may be able to complete all assignments and tests missed during the absence, receiving full credit for completed work.

Unexcused Absences and Truancy
All absences that are considered unexcused by the California Department of Education will be recorded as such in our student information system.
Per California Education Code, Section 48260, “Any pupil subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory continuation who is absent from school without a valid excuse more than three days in one school year is a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor or to the superintendent of the school district.” A student is classified as truant when the student has missed school on three (3) occasions involving any combination of the following:
- An unexcused absence from school for a full day or more than 30 minutes
- Being more than 30 minutes late to school without a valid excuse
Efforts will be made to correct behaviors that may lead to truancy such as tardiness or being absent from assigned school activities. Interventions may include referral to support personnel, detention, or a school attendance hearing.
Mandatory Parent/Guardian Notifications About Truancy
California Education Code Section 48260.5 mandates that schools notify parents/guardians when a student's unexcused absences meet or exceed the following benchmarks:
- First Notification: Any combination of three (3) unexcused absences or excessive tardies (30 or more minutes) in one school year.
- Second Notification: Any combination of six (6) unexcused absences or excessive tardies (30 or more minutes) in one school year.
- Third Notification: Any combination of nine (9) unexcused absences or excessive tardies (30 or more minutes) in one school year.
Parents/guardians will receive a truancy letter when their child meets or exceeds these benchmarks.
